Brief Bio of the Music Artist

His real name is Siyabonga Nene, professionally known as Big Zulu, is a South African rapper, songwriter, and actor born on April 7, 1986, in Bergville, KwaZulu-Natal. Growing up, he was influenced by traditional Maskandi and Isichathamiya music, particularly inspired by artists like Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Phuzekemisi, and Imithente.

Before venturing into music, Big Zulu worked as a taxi driver. In 2009, he decided to pursue a career in SA music, and in 2013, he gained recognition by winning the Back to the City rap contest. His breakthrough came in 2016 with the release of the single “Donsa Nkabi”.

Worthy to be noted, in 2015, he signed with Universal Music and released his debut album “Ushun Wenkabi” in 2018. This was followed by “Ungqongqoshe Wongqongqoshe” in 2019, which featured collaborations with artists like Kwesta and Cassper Nyovest. The album’s singles, including “Ak’laleki” and “Ama Million” received critical acclaim and commercial success.

Furthermore, Big Zulu’s third studio album “Ichwane Lenyoka” (released in 2021), produced chart-topping singles such as “Mali Eningi”, “Inhlupheko”, and “Umuzi eSandton”. The lead single “Mali Eningi” was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry of South Africa (RiSA).

In conclusion, beyond music, Big Zulu has appeared in television shows like Isibaya, One Mic, and Uzalo. In 2019, he founded his own record label, Inkabi Records, signing artists such as Mduduzi Ncube and Lwah Ndlunkulu. His contributions to the South African music industry have earned him multiple awards, including seven South African Hip Hop Awards and a South African Music Award.

The 2025 South African music project was officially released on the 11th of April 2025 under Inkabi Records, the artist’s Label.
